World Cup Stars of the Future?

On the 11th May supporters, parents and teachers of Ashurst Wood, Crawley Down, St. Mary's and Blackwell saw some fantastic football and some possible world cup stars of the future. The reason for this exhibition of football was to mark the finale of the 3rd Annual 'Primaryship'. The East Grinstead Primary School 7-Aside Football League has made a real impact on the quality and focus on football - for both boys and girls. This year the group games were played at Sackville School, but to add an extra dimension, the semi-final and final were played at the East Grinstead Sports Club.

Below are the final league tables for the BIG School League and the SMALL School League. Both groups were very close and there was real tension in the latter stages with only two places up for grabs.

In the BSL table Crawley Down went through as winners and Blackwell sneaked past the Meads on goals scored. Similarly, Ashurst Wood went through as Champions of the SSL and it was St. Mary's who pipped Turners Hill on goal difference!

The semi-finals saw the winners of the BSL play the runners-up in the SSL and vis-versa. This meant that Crawley Down would play St. Mary's and Ashurst Wood would battle it out against Blackwell. Both games witnessed some exciting attacking football as the teams were really able to express themselves on a big pitch.

St. Mary's looked favourites to win through in the first semi-final going 2-0 up before half time, but an amazing turnaround saw Crawley Down fight back to win 3-2 with a last gasp winner!

In the second semi final, Ashurst Wood showed their extra strength to edge out a very skilful Blackwell team. Whilst the two finalists rested before the big final, Blackwell and Ashurst Wood played-off for third place.  It was won by a last minute winner from St. Mary’s.

The final was set-up as the winners of the two league stages had managed to win through the play-off matches to earn the right to compete for the 'Primaryship' title. In a cagey opening, both sides created good chances to score with goalkeepers being called into action with increasing regularity. However, with Ashurst Wood having recorded an amazing record of not conceding any goals in any of their matches, it was going to be tough for Crawley Down to break them down. And so it proved, as Ashurst Wood managed another clean sheet and marched on to an impressive victory.
